&lt;p&gt;No phrase captures as much about New Zealand culture and aspirations as ‘number eight wire’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These three words, entrenched in our world view as they are, speak of our isolated, resource-deprived place in the world. They communicate our inventiveness and resourcefulness. And, perhaps more subtly, they declare our rejection of anything ‘high-falluting’ or ‘too flash’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The cardinal sin for the New Zealander is to be anything but ‘down to earth’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;img alt="" style="border-right: 0px solid; border-top: 0px solid; float: left; margin-bottom: 14px; border-left: 0px solid; margin-right: 24px; border-bottom: 0px solid" src="../images/blog/britten-v1000.jpg" /&gt;A person that has a ‘number eight wire’ mentality is definitely down to earth, but also a ‘good bloke’ that can fix stuff and make it work. Without a fuss.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Our icons conform to this model perfectly. Sir Ed ‘knocked the bastard off’. No big deal, no fanfare.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ we see Burt Munro, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, building a bike from scratch, by hand, and showing those ‘bloody yanks’ a thing or two.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We read or view the stories of these heroes, edited as they are for dramatic effect, and we experience that momentary sense of national pride that is so rare for the New Zealander (at least relatively).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But is the ‘number eight wire’ model really a good one for New Zealand? Does it really work as we imagine it to?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let’s take a look at the story of John Britten and the Britten motorcycle for a moment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Casually stroll through the official Britten motorcycle website and you will quickly get a sense that the celebration of the ‘poorly resourced but doggedly determined’ kiwi battler is alive and well.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The story explains how “as a child John Britten built go-karts out of old packing cases and at the age of twelve had saved enough money to buy a petrol motor and build his first motor powered go-kart.”&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some years later, John decided to design a new type of bike from scratch, after failing to obtain the performance he desired from a Ducati race bike he stripped and redesigned.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The story goes that “John pictured his finished result first with a hot glue gun and a roll of number eight wire.” John then “did all his own drawings, made his own patterns and designed his own engine”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;John went on to develop the famed V1000 and raced it around the world. As the official website explains: “the Britten has been so successful because what started out as a hobby in a garage at home, became a world class motorcycle recognised for its brilliance in engineering all over the world. Unlike established companies who invest huge amounts of money in the development work and are obligated to show a result for that money, John Britten persevered on a trial and error basis until he was successful.”&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That last sentence speaks volumes; a two-fingered salute to the ‘corporate types’ and a stern rejection of any kind of formal processes or ‘showing results for money spent’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;John Britten beat the world. John Britten built something great. John Britten did it his way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the truth of the Britten motorcycle and the man they called ‘the Backyard Visionary’ is, like all great stories, somewhat more complex than it appears.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dorenda Britten, John’s sister and designindustry Managing Director, worked alongside John through the last of these tumultuous years and served as his “biscuit maker, design consultant and sounding board”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dorenda says that John was a “typical innovator/entrepreneur: obsessively focused, absolutely determined and desperate to prove something”. She says that as Britten Motorcycle Company grew, there were some key problems that limited both its success and its ability to sustain a competitive advantage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;“Every time we were at a race”, Dorenda explains, “There would be dozens of photographers hovering round taking photos of the bike. Then people would come up and touch the bike; lifting up bits of the bike to see how it worked and what its secrets were. There was no way you would ever be able to touch any other team’s bike. But John didn’t really care – he would be talking to someone, caught up in his passion to win the race”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All attention was considered to be good attention. Anyone that was interested was assumed to be a supporter.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Far from seeking to protect the intellectual property and innovation embodied in the Britten, John was focused simply on winning. These sort of ‘corporate’ considerations were of little interest to someone more comfortable tinkering in the workshop.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the ‘open-source’ attitude John demonstrated was not reciprocated by others.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dorenda tells of a visit John made to Yamaha’s factory: “They invited him in but he wasn’t allowed to see anything or touch anything. He wasn’t even allowed in the design room”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While Britten was winning races, Yamaha was building a brand, keeping an eye on the competition and protecting their investment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And this, says Dorenda, was the key problem with John’s approach: the focus was always short term.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;“He was not interested enough in where the company might go, what might be built or what might be achieved in the future. He was always just focused on winning the next race. Any other discussion was just seen as a distraction from winning the next race”, says Dorenda.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This short term focus was exacerbated, believes Dorenda, by the fact that so much of what made Britten motorcycles great was contained within John’s head.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dorenda explains: “John saw all of it as a personal challenge, as something to prove. He didn’t spend a lot of time with other people in the team talking strategy or where he wanted to take the company. That was ‘business-talk’ and John never really saw Britten Motorcycles as a business”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, says Dorenda, when opportunities to develop the company, to grow Britten Motorcycle Company into an institution that could still be winning races today, John baulked or delayed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And then, when John tragically succumbed to cancer at age 45, Britten Motorcycle Company essentially died with him. The potential that existed within the oft-retold story was lost. All that now remains of Britten Motorcycle Company are a handful of bikes in the hands of museums and private collectors around the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;No more wins. No more startling innovation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All that remains of what could have been a world-beating company is a website that sells Britten polar fleeces, t-shirts and mouse pads.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So often in New Zealand entrepreneurs and innovators have great ideas and tremendous personal energy, but not the ability or determination to commercialise their ideas into sustainable businesses.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some would say that turning Britten into a ‘big corporate animal’ would go against the very spirit of what John stood for, or that the bikes never would have been created had John not ‘done it his way’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Maybe so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But what if John had taken the time to slow down and share what was in his head? What if he’d found the right person to develop the business while he focused his efforts on developing the bikes?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What if John had built, or allowed the building of, an enduring brand; a company where the knowledge did not reside in one man’s head?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Perhaps if IP had been captured and protected, strategy determined and the future considered Britten Motorcycle would still be the darling of the tracks today.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The story of Britten Motorcycle Company’s demise is a sad one, punctuated by a host of ‘if onlys’. It’s also a story that is being relived in innovative and fast-growing companies throughout New Zealand.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And the problem can be attributed to the countless coils of ‘number eight wire’ that take the place of strategy in our creative enterprises.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Great ideas and creative talent is the starting point, but without strategic rigour, objectivity and – gasp – the sober voices of the left brained number crunchers, organisers and managers, great ideas just go to waste.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Successful, innovative companies are a balanced fusion of the left-brain ‘rationals’ and the right-brain ‘creatives’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Only these companies will see the dreams of their ‘backyard visionaries’ come to fruition.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Sometimes being right gives one no satisfaction at all. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sometimes it serves only to remind one how fragile and tenuous the world of commerce really is.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article that follows is one we wrote in December of 2005 for &lt;a href="http://www.nzbusiness.co.nz/" target="_blank"&gt;NZBusiness magazine&lt;/a&gt;. It was based on our reading of the economic climate at the time and on the ever-increasing prevalence of opportunism – rather than sustainable delivery of value – seen in global economies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We didn’t see the credit crisis coming, nor did we expect the housing market in the US to bring the world to its knees so dramatically and so quickly. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But we did see the ‘storm’ coming, and the inherent ‘unsustainability’ of many commercial activities. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article is reproduced below in full, followed by our update on how design should now be used to respond to New Zealand’s fifth consecutive recessionary quarter.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How Can Design Cushion the Coming Economic Blow?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Business publications are currently falling over themselves to run articles on design, often more out of a sense of necessity than any real understanding of the issues (with the notable exception of this fine publication!).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This superficiality is unfortunate because after a sustained period of being force-fed a subject, we tend to shut off and ignore it from that point forward. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As the storm-clouds of economic recession gather on the horizon, being ignorant of design would be a risky move indeed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As interest rates and inflation rise, business confidence is in freefall. We are hearing horror stories about the potential economic effects of an avian flu pandemic, and our high dollar continues to batter our exporters. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is not just the paranoid or sensationalistic who are now saying that the road ahead may be rough.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Smart businesses will be now (or will have been for some time) preparing for what lies ahead. They will be gathering data, analysing social and economic trends and determining what they need to do to stay nimble and adaptable in changing times.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Although it is alarmist to compare our current global economic situation to the years immediately preceding the great depression, it is interesting to note that many notable companies, including Ford and Proctor and Gamble, weathered that storm and will almost certainly survive whatever faces us in the next decade.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Yet it is not just the big players that can continue to perform in economic recession, any organisation that understands design has a fighting chance of protecting itself, or even growing, when times get tough.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;designindustry defines design as formulating the best-fit product, service or process that works both for the intended consumer, and for the producer. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Good design operates as a function of six quality principles:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Contextuality &lt;/strong&gt;Design considers internal contexts such as production cost and manufacturability and external contexts such as market environment and culture&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Simplicity &lt;/strong&gt;Design is logical, restrained and focused on core purpose &lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Functionality &lt;/strong&gt;Design ensures appropriateness for getting the ‘job done right’&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p lang="en-US"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sustainability &lt;/strong&gt;Design’s use of resources caters to present and future needs&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p lang="en-US"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;User-focus &lt;/strong&gt;Design empathises with the user, and seeks to empower and make an emotional connection&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p lang="en-US"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Prescience &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span lang="en-NZ"&gt;Design predicts and delivers on what will be demanded tomorrow, not just today&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is the last two principles that should be of particular interest to companies worried about the future.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A number of things are known about ‘typical’ consumers in a recessive economy: they tend to have lower disposable and discretionary income, they are required to carefully prioritise spending decisions and they, obviously, begin to avoid purchasing goods or services that are not necessities.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A design-focused company will be working to know as much about its consumers right now as it can. How will they react if a recession kicks in? Will they continue to purchase our products, or will they do without? Do we have a relationship with our customers whereby they will make cuts elsewhere so they can continue to buy our products?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is a certain cynical satisfaction in knowing that those companies that have foisted bad service and lousy products on us will find that when consumer demand drops, they will be the first on the chopping block. Shonky tradesmen take note!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Companies that have invested in designing products and services that so enrich their customers’ lives that they have become ‘trusted friends’ will fare much better. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A recent article on American airline Southwest noted that when they were unable to fly customers after 9/11, many of their longer-term customers mailed back refund cheques as a sign of loyalty and commitment. Would your customers do that for you?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Design-led companies will also be projecting themselves into the future to ‘extrapolate’ what the market is going to look like. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Just as Howard Hughes predicted the coming jet age and Apple had the iPod ready for people just as they realised they would quite like a cool MP3 player, companies must now gaze into their business ‘crystal balls’ to determine their place in a slowing economy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the time when rehashing the same old ideas simply won’t do. Nor will cutting prices in the hope that this alone will attract custom. Instead, smart companies must start to figure out how their expertise and market knowledge will serve them in two or five or ten years. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If the products and services offered by your company might be ‘squeezed’ in a recession, what alternatives could you provide that would not suffer to the same degree?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When money gets tight what are people going to demand? What emotional needs and concerns will become prominent and how could your company meet them? How can you change and adapt so that a tight economy results in a sideways, and not downwards, move for your company?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These are the sorts of design questions that need to be asked now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Design, properly integrated into an organisation, offers a perspective that looks very deliberately and objectively at that organisation’s products and services. It draws on an eclectic variety of inputs to ensure that every angle is covered and every possibility considered.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A company that embraces design and adopts a ‘design culture’ will always be aware of what it can offer its customers, and how it can forge relationships of trust and loyalty.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When – not if – economic recession arrives, it will be those companies that have honoured their customers, thought carefully about their offerings and prepared intelligently for a changing future that will thrive and survive.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The design ignorant will perish.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Well, some of this seems a bit quaint now; do you remember avian flu, high interest rates and a soaring New Zealand dollar? My, how times have changed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the core message of this article remains exactly the same: know your customer. Know them better than they know themselves. Predict what they will require and be prepared to craft new strategy, products and services to meet changing demand.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Companies that can effectively use design to read the market and act accordingly can do well.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Take the real estate market for instance. In times of recession, people tend to sit on properties (if they can afford to) and stay out of the market rather than sell and risk losses. If you’re a real estate agent, that hurts.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But, on the other hand, when times are tough people tend to look to invest in the value of their homes and improve features such as energy efficiency. Organisations like EcoSmartHome (&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.ecosmarthome.co.nz/"&gt;www.ecosmarthome.co.nz&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;), which provides home energy efficiency assessments and products, have seen their sales skyrocket over the last few months as people look to sit tight on properties and reduce their powerbills. Increasing power prices also reinforce this trend.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Moving from real estate sales to energy efficiency assessments may be an unrealistic business move, but if the economy continues to shrink the rules of business will have to change for the sake of survival. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As we suggested three years ago: “When money gets tight what are people going to demand? What emotional needs and concerns will become prominent and how could your company meet them? How can you change and adapt so that a tight economy results in a sideways, and not downwards, move for your company?”&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you are not asking these questions now, you have good reason to worry.&lt;/p&gt;

The temptation is to seek and implement short-term solutions to relieve the immediate pressure, rather than making real change that delivers lasting results. This reaction often sees us failing big and slow, rather than small and fast. Small and fast allows us to put our experience to work and move on.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So let’s keep things simple – but how?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By using design as a process rather than limited to an end result or product, we can tackle even the most challenging of circumstances. Design provides a framework to aid creativity and encourage innovation that can be shared. Such a framework not only welcomes new ideas but helps to evaluate ideas fairly, no matter how radical or ‘left field’ they may appear.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Making a commitment to simplicity can be threatening for some. For those who feel blessed with the ability to comprehend complexity, simplicity has the potential to shake the very foundations upon which they have made themselves indispensable. For many people, their ability to comprehend complexity is a measure of self worth. Simplicity strips this from them and potentially exposes real shortfalls in their intellectual capacity or expertise.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To add to the problem, society often pays homage to those individuals who have constructed worlds that are so complex that they could not possibly be explained to mere mortals. Apparently complexity can make things more valuable. If a job is considered simple, does it deserve to be paid well? It may well be far more lucrative for the job to be seen to be complex!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In our society complexity provides a way to demonstrate value and a place to hide. It allows us to avoid making decisions about priorities. We may also tend to keep things complex by default because we don’t understand something enough or because we are afraid of being wrong. We cover all bases by introducing more complexity into the discussion or process because to be simple is far more challenging. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To achieve simplicity, all contributions of ideas, both our own and other peoples, need to be expressed and fairly evaluated. We need to develop a high degree of trust in a group to be able to achieve openness and a well understood and consistent evaluation process helps to make tough decisions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Design processes will rapidly become recognised globally for their potential to grapple with, and help to solve, tomorrow’s sticky problems. Design thinking is no longer optional. It will permeate every aspect of our lives. New Zealand must choose to be ahead of the game and can begin by enrolling all organisational people in this discussion – not just “designers”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There are few people who can think critically or constructively about the future. Most of us, without realising it are reacting to past events or what is happening at this very minute. Ideas that will shape our future needs must engage more people in a manageable way. New Zealand companies and organisations need to start addressing the processes by which they achieve results with intent rather by accident. It is time to get things done “by design”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Despite the view we have of ourselves, we find that New Zealand is not a leader but a follower in the field of design thinking. For this reason, designindustry is committed to enrolling as many people as possible in the process of talking about design in order to understand how we can make this work for all of us. We need to consider:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;A personal framework for thinking enables each of us to evaluate ideas BUT asks the question, what framework do we have for evaluating shared ideas? &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Design might provide the way but meets a lot of resistance in this a-traditional role &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Design thinking is no longer optional. It will permeate every aspect of our lives. New Zealand must choose to be ahead of the game &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Why has designindustry chosen to promote more communication about design? &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;We think design is more than just about “designers” &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;New Zealand needs to enrol all organisational people in this discussion &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Leaving things to chance or to others doesn’t produce outcomes that are suited to the problem. If we are to be a nation of lab-rats for international companies, then why not turn this to our advantage? &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;There are few people who can think critically or constructively about the future. Most just react to past events or what is happening at this minute. Ideas that will shape our future needs must engage more people &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Unfortunately, it is easier to criticise something already done than commit to creating something of value from scratch &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;There is much resistance to inviting diverse people to contribute to a design process as this is often considered to be ‘design by committee’ and many organisations prefer a structure of unilateral decision making from the top down &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;It is time to be honest with ourselves. New Zealand is not a leader but a follower in the field of design thinking &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Therefore, it is time that our companies and organisations started to address the processes by which they achieved results with intent rather by accident. It is time to get things done “by design” &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
