designindustry alive and well!

Dorenda Britten - Monday, December 12, 2011

It is time to say hello again after a sixteen month hiatus. Once we explain that we are based in Christchurch we often have little need to explain why we’ve been a little quiet. The upside of the ‘Earthquake Saga’ is that many of us have learnt to live and work closely with virtual strangers as well as extended family members. We have all become expert navigators on ‘third-world’ roads.

We might not have been active in the ether but as ever we have been active on the ground!

We have a number of exciting projects on the go at the moment, including a strategic design review of one of the State Owned Enterprises, MetService’s businesses, Metra and a systems design project with the Ministry for Environment, Holcim, Christchurch City Council, BRANZ, Winstone Wallboards plus a group of significant waste industry companies.

designindustry has initiated a design research project with University of Otago, School of Business which will study the applicability of our Ten Design Principles™ Framework in small businesses in New Zealand.  The long goal for designindustry is to help New Zealand to both create and leverage a strong brand through ensuring our products and services meet increasingly complex human environmental and fiscal needs.

Aside from her consulting work Dorenda has been busy in the last year judging for the New Zealand Hi-Tech awards, for the fourth year.  She presented on Design in Health to the GP’s Conference, Auckland in September, the ISPIM Innovation Symposium, Wellington in November and to Ministry of Science in October.  She has recently become a contributor to Unlimited magazine.

We are currently going through a strategic design process leading to a re-development of our communication strategy, including website, which we are aiming to launch by the end of the first quarter 2012.

In the meantime Dorenda is happy to connect with you through Linkedin or by email via our contact form.

Information Anxiety – Richard Saul Wurman

Dorenda Britten - Thursday, August 26, 2010

An oldie but worth a new look. First published in 1991

"...the most essential prerequisite to understanding is to be able to admit when you don’t understand something. Being able to admit that you don’t know is liberating. … is the ideal frame of mind to receive new information."

Do Good Design – David B. Berman

Get out of your studios and into the board rooms designers!

A call for designers to re-evaluate their role in society - commit to becoming (part of) the solution not part of the problem.

A Short History of Progress - Ronald Wright

Dorenda Britten - Thursday, August 26, 2010

If you are beginning to think that our present behaviour is typical of failed societies at the zenith of their greed and arrogance - this is the dinosaur factor.

Time to question progress itself? The ultimate design challenge?

Health Cheque - Gareth Morgan & Geoff Simmons

Dorenda Britten - Thursday, August 26, 2010

Thanks Gareth Morgan for choosing to help us understand the big issues of our time – this time a reflection on our Health system.

There is no more emotional issue than access to healthcare.

We lurch from restructure to restructure apparently unable to grasp the critical first step in Systems Design – that of identifying and communicating the core challenge.

Delivering to current and future needs without substantially increasing the purse is surely the challenge. Nothing short of cultural change will get us there.

Bird On A Wire - Theresa Gattung

Dorenda Britten - Thursday, August 26, 2010

Although I went in looking for it didn’t discover the ‘real’ Theresa Gattung.

While not what you’d call a stuffed shirt she depicts herself as an expensive suit with sleeves rolled up! Perhaps that’s what the telecommunications industry is still looking for?

We look forward to seeing her match her skills to New Zealand’s flagging strong wool industry. This will provide an opportunity for her to declare her real passion and to inspire progress in a sector so desperately unhinged.

The Fifth Discipline - Peter M. Senge

Dorenda Britten - Thursday, August 26, 2010

Also around for a while. Second edition.

Essential reading for those who see design thinking as one of many disciplines needed to create and support human enterprise in the 21st century.

For more by Peter Senge see our December 2009 Blog for Presence.

what our clients say

“I felt the “Design for Business Growth” course was a useful course to help open the mindset of the designer (or innovator) to deliver a product, service or technology that has sound commercial value."
